This award-winning image was recognized for its authentic storytelling and featured on the cover of The Bucks County Cardinal's July 2026 special publication. What made it stand out wasn't elaborate planning or perfect posing, but a genuine, unscripted moment that revealed the subject's unique personality.
In this case study, I share the story behind the photograph, what caught my eye, why I chose that exact moment to press the shutter, and how thoughtful visual storytelling can transform an everyday scene into an image that connects with people.
The Assignment
The Bucks County Cardinals' July 2026 Cover Art Contest celebrated America's 250th Anniversary by inviting artists and photographers to capture the history, character, and community spirit of Bucks County. This photograph was selected as the winning cover image.
The Story Behind the Photograph
Red, White & Bucks County
Captured from within the Memorial Day parade route at the Bucks County Administration Building, this moment reflects what feels most like Bucks County—flags waving, neighbors gathering, and hometown pride on full display. Generations line the streets to honor, remember, and celebrate community.
As we look ahead to America’s 250th, the semiquincentennial represents life, history, and community here in Bucks County. Traditions like this remind us where we come from and the people who made it possible.
Doylestown has always embraced its traditions, and few bring the community together like a hometown parade. With America's 250th Anniversary as the inspiration for the contest, I wanted to capture more than flags and floats—I wanted to capture the spirit of patriotism in action.
This photograph features a local small business owner volunteering alongside her son's Cub Scout pack during the parade. As she walked beside the float, she wasn't posing for the camera. She was simply enjoying the moment—waving to the crowd, supporting her community, and celebrating alongside her neighbors.
That authentic expression of joy, service, and hometown pride is what drew me to the scene. For me, the image represents the best of Bucks County: neighbors supporting neighbors, local businesses giving back, and a community that proudly comes together to celebrate its shared traditions.
Why This Photograph Worked
- Patience over posing – The best moments can't be forced. Sometimes they simply need time to unfold.
- Watching instead of directing – Rather than asking someone to smile, I look for genuine interactions and natural expressions.
- Waiting for authentic emotion – A real moment will always outshine a perfectly staged one.
- Following the light – Soft, natural light helped reinforce the warmth and joy of the scene without distracting from the story.
- Finding personality over perfection – It's the little quirks, gestures, and expressions that make an image memorable.
