The Story Behind the Toe Beans

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest impression.

A pair of sun-soaked paws, one very comfortable cat, and a moment too good to pass up.

My photograph, Toe Bean Toasting, featuring my cat Persy, earned a spot among the Top 10 finalists and received an Honorable Mention in the 2026 Peddler's Village Pet Photo Contest. There was even a little prize money involved!

But what makes this photograph special isn't the recognition. It's how one simple, unscripted moment captured so much personality.

In this case study, I share what caught my eye, why I reached for my camera, and how a little observation, timing, and humor can turn an everyday moment into a memorable photograph.

The Assignment

The 2026 Peddler's Village Pet Photo Contest invited pet lovers to share photographs celebrating their furry companions.

I entered Toe Bean Toasting, a playful photo of my cat Persy doing what cats do best: getting completely comfortable without a care in the world.

The Story Behind the Photograph

Photo Title:

Toe Bean Toasting

About the Photo:

Persy has never been particularly concerned with looking photogenic. Like most cats, she operates entirely on her own schedule.

This particular moment didn't involve an elaborate setup (iPhone camera only), carefully arranged props, or a cooperative model. Just a cat enjoying a little downtime and putting those irresistible toe beans on full display.

Sometimes the best photographs happen when your subject has absolutely no idea you're taking them.

What Caught My Eye:

As a photographer, I'm always looking for the little details that make a subject interesting.

In this case, it was the combination of Persy's relaxed pose, the warmth of the moment, and the unexpected humor of those perfectly positioned paws.

There was something wonderfully expressive about a photograph that didn't even need to show a face to communicate personality.

It was simple, funny, and unmistakably Persy.

And that's what made me grab my camera.

Why This Photograph Worked

  • Personality over perfection - The photograph captures a genuine moment rather than a carefully staged scene.
  • Finding the unexpected – A small, ordinary detail became the most interesting part of the image.
  • Keeping the composition simple – The focus stays on the subject without unnecessary distractions.
  • A little humor goes a long way – An image doesn't have to be serious to create an emotional connection.
  • Recognizing the moment – Sometimes the most important photography skill is simply knowing when something is worth capturing.

The Result

Top 10 Finalist & Honorable Mention

2026 Peddler's Village Pet Photo Contest

Out of more than 100 entries, Toe Bean Toasting earned a spot among the Top 10 finalists, an Honorable Mention, and even a little prize money!

Will Persy be contributing her winnings toward household expenses? Unlikely. But she has officially earned her keep as a photography model.

Not bad for an afternoon of lounging around—and a quick snap with an iPhone!

Why It Matters

Great visual storytelling isn't always about elaborate productions, dramatic locations, or perfectly posed subjects.

Sometimes it's about noticing what makes someone—or something—unique.

The same approach applies whether I'm photographing a pet, a small business owner, a team, or a community event. I look for the details, expressions, and unexpected moments that reveal personality and make an image feel authentic.

Because people connect with personality. They remember photographs that make them feel something, whether that's joy, nostalgia, curiosity, or simply a smile.

The best stories don't always need to be created. Sometimes they just need to be noticed.
